Current Mortality Rates on U.S. Dairies

چکیده
Results from the USDA:APHIS:VS National Animal Health Monitoring System (NAHMS) Dairy 2002 survey reported that approximately 5% of dairy cows die, onfarm, across the country each year. This is a very high death rate compared with that of beef cows or feedlot animals, where annual death rates were estimated at 1 to1.5%. In the NAHMS survey unknown reasons accounted for the largest percentage (20%) of producer reported dairy cow deaths, followed by calving difficulty problems (17%), mastitis (17%), and lameness or injury (14%).

Comparison of Upper Limb Muscle Activity among Workers in Large-Herd U.S. and Small-Herd Italian Dairies
OBJECTIVES Commercial cow milking tasks, regardless of dairy size, have been documented in many regions of the world as strenuous work requiring high muscular effort, awkward positions, and task repetition. Large-herd dairies are common in the U.S., while Europe historically has mostly small-herd dairies. The objective of this study was to compare the upper limb muscle activity during milking t...
متن کاملA Comparison of Conventional and Organic Milk Production Systems in the U.S
Organic milk production is one of the fastest growing segments of organic agriculture in the U.S., but little is known about the relative costs and returns of organic and conventional dairies. This study utilizes a nationwide survey of dairy operations for 2005 that includes a targeted sample of organic dairies. Treatment-effect sample-selection models were specified to isolate the impact of ch...
متن کاملEconomic opportunities for sexed semen on commercial dairies
Dairy producers and others have been discussing the use of sexed semen for many years. Sexing bovine semen is possible because X-sperm have 3.8% more DNA than Y-sperm. This difference can be identified with a flow cytometer by staining the sperm with a fluorescent dye that binds to the DNA. The technique is reasonably accurate (10% error rate) but still very expensive and slow, which has limite...

From 2002 to 2013, bovine tuberculosis (bTB) caused by Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis) has been detected on numerous dairies in California. In total, twelve herds had bTB detected and are included in the case series which describes these recent outbreaks and discusses potential pathways of introduction. Epidemiological investigations to determine the initial source of bTB in each herd included o...

modity produced in California, the top dairyproducing state in the country (Sumner et al. 2015). In the western United States, 30% of dairy farms keep about 1.8 million lactating cows in drylots (open, dirt-based pens), where sheltered areas may or may not be available (USDA 2016). Drylots are thought to be advantageous, in comparison to other intensive housing systems (e.g., free-stalls, concr...
